AWARD FOR SILICON VALLEY CHAPTER MEMBER
Honoring a dedicated public servant, Congressman Tom Lantos paid tribute to a retired Palo Alto, CA chaplain who made a profound impact on people’s lives both while serving in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam and working at the Veterans Administration hospital for years.
Among other achievements, Chaplain Edward Bastille established an American Indian cultural center to meet Native American veterans’ spiritual needs, and hired the first Buddhist and Muslim Chaplains at the hospital.
Along with Ed’s close friend Father Steven Haley looking on, Lantos presented Chaplain Bastille with a statement from the Congressional Record commemorating his good works.
The statement said in part, “he is a fine example of the power of one to make a difference in this world.”
