    MEMBER TURNOVER PLAGUES COUNCIL

As we approach the end of the year chapters often will be looking forward to an election of officers, perhaps in November or December, with an installation in January.

A new president takes office and leads the chapter. And the new president automatically becomes an affiliated chapter member of the Council. And with responsibilities.

It’s not easy to move forward at the state level, accomplish sometimes complex purposes and missions, when a large number of new presidents come on board annually.

New presidents frequently come into office with little knowledge of the Council, and sometimes not knowing that the chapter is affiliated with the Council.

Once the election takes place, it is hoped the incumbent president will (1) provide the Council the name, grade, and address, telephone, and e-mail contact information for the new president and (2) provide the new president with a briefing on CAL-MOAA, it purposes, mission, management structure, and of course the president’s responsibilites related to the Council’s state level activities.

In short, the departing president should provide MOAA National and CAL-MOAA with a roster of new chapter officers and provide the new president with full information about the Council, including a copy of the bylaws.

An easy way for a new chapter president to learn about the Council would be to examine the website and specifically the weblog. There are many articles about the Council, its future, current management issues, and more all posted to the archives which can be accessed on the front page of the weblog. The place to start would be “The Future of CAL-MOAA.”

As we approach the end of the year, presidents are urged to arrange an effective transition, helping the new president learn about Council responsibilities and over time make a significant contribution to statewide efforts.

Please remember to pass on the CAL-MOAA torch.

Two suggestions - recommend strongly that chapters establish 2 year terms for presidents and other officers!

Better continuity, don’t have to have a draft committee every year!

The other - do away with the separate login ID for the Weblog here - I have no idea what ID or password I should be using! (See comment under the item “Baby Pictures”)

Why not just have the login ID be the email address we receive the updates at ? Why not have a cookie to make it simpler ?

The concept of 1 year terms for chapter officers and staff might be the cause of some problems. I suggest we make it 4 years, like with Presidents and governors.

As a newsletter editor, that seems to be a natural term - I did the Los Alamitos chapter NL for that long, and looks like I’ll have the GW newsletter for that long also.

It works for me to also be the Program chairman, as I publicize my programs in the newsletter.

Membership VP might have a shorter term - 2 years.

Worth talking about at the President’s event coming up Nov 29-Dec 2!
