OPPORTUNITIES FOR STATE-LEVEL SERVICE AVAILABLE
The cartoon Dilbert by Scott Adams is popular with many in the world of work. In a recent strip the character Dogbert says, “Donate to my campaign and I’ll let you drill for oil in my opponent’s lawn. And I’ll appoint you to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.” That draws a question, “Is that as fun as it sounds?” Dogbert’s reply, “Not for your neighbors.”
According to the bylaws, “The Council at the CAL-MOAA Annual Meeting held during odd-numbered years shall elect the CAL-MOAA President and Vice President.”
President Larry Stumpf, USAF-Ret, indicated that the election will take place December 1, 2007 at the Council of Presidents Annual Meeting in San Luis Obispo with installation of officers to to follow during the Saturday evening banquet.
At an EXCOM meeting early this year a nominating committee presented the names of COL Warren Enos, AUS (RET) from Northern California for President and BG Wayne Hoffman, AUS (RET) from Southern California for Vice President.
The voting procedure makes provision for different votes including a general consent, voice vote, roll-call vote, and even a secret ballot. In past years elections were completed either with approval by general consent or a simple voice vote.
The bylaws also state, “Additional nominations may be made from the floor prior to the election, provided a brief biography and statement of willingness to serve are made available to all of the Affiliated Chapter Presidents or the Designated Representatives not less than 24 hours before the scheduled election.”
It is an honor to serve the military community by competing for a Council leadership role. Members who would like to be nominated from the floor should contact LtCol Stumpf well in advance of the Annual Meeting.
State Directors shall be elected in time to appear at the designated annual meeting of the Area at the Council of Presidents meeting in the even-number years. The next election will take place in late 2008 at the Annual Meeting set most likely in conjunction with the upcoming MOAA Western States Leadership Symposium, South Shore Lake Tahoe.
The bylaws state, “The president shall appoint officers, staff, and committee chairs to serve the Council subject to the approval of the Executive Committee (EXCOM). Some of these include the positions of Secretary and Treasurer as well as Chairs of the Legislative, Budget and Finance, and Credentials Committees, all of which are non-voting members of the Executive Committee (EXCOM).”
Any California member interested in state-level Council experience should be prepared to make interests and needs known shortly after the first of the new year. Most positions have dedicated and highly qualified individuals in place, but there will always be an opportunity for service by an interested member.
