ALL MOAA MEMBERS ARE URGED TO ATTEND ANNUAL MEETING

The California Council of Chapters (CAL-MOAA) will conduct its annual meeting at the Embassy Suites Hotel, San Luis Obispo, November 30-December 2, 2007 in order to conduct the Council’s business, provide information of value, and discuss the critical issues of the day.

All California MOAA members are invited to this important meeting.

To receive full information and registration materials, simply send an e-mail to CDR John Sammons, USPHS (RET), the Council’s Secretary, at secretarycalmoaa@gmail.com.

This mini-convention represents a splendid opportunity to get acquainted with specific national defense issues and learn how MOAA members are working to preserve and even enhance earned entitlements.

At the same time, and with spouses and guests especially in mind, it’s a great chance to enjoy the beauty and attractions of California’s Central Coast.

Hotel check-in time begins at 3:00pm on Friday evening November 30th. The hotel will provide transportation for those arriving by air or Amtrak. The hotel is beautiful and offers all the comforts and amenities expected from a fine facility. The hotel is located adjacent to a major shopping center so services including overflow parking are more than adequate.

Since hotel reservations must be completed no later than October 31st to get the special Annual Meeting rate, time is of the essence.

At this time specific details of the Council of Chapter Presidents Annual Meeting have not yet been released; however, the following is a reasonable description of the weekend event.

There will be a hotel manager hosted open bar reception in the atrium from 5:30 to 6:30 or later, a chance to meet and greet, make new acquaintances and meet old friends.

Area directors are likely to conduct a no-host dinner at a nearby restaurant Friday evening, a time when chapter presidents and other interested persons can meet and get better acquainted as well as preview the issues to be considered on Saturday.

An Executive Committee (EXCOM) meeting will be held at 8:00pm in one of the hotel suites as a prelude to the Council of Presidents Annual Meeting. All interested MOAA members are invited to attend. The meeting mainly will be about the Council’s financial status and 2008 annual budget as well as reports about affiliated chapter plans, events and activities.

Breakfast the following day for registered guests will be a delicious cooked-to-order meal sure to please the most discriminating diner.

The Annual Meeting convenes Saturday morning at 8:00am and will include a financial report, a presentation on MOAA National perspectives, a chance for Area Directors to meet with chapter presidents on a more formal basis, a review of federal and California legislative objectives and strategies, continuation of the strategic planning process, and just before the luncheon an election of officers, the new president and vice president, for 2008.

The luncheon will be a very nice Santa Maria style barbeque, a Central Coast specialty made famous over the years.

In the afternoon there will be briefings and discussions on, as a minimum, chapter support issues, the Council’s organization structure with emphasis on Area Director roles and responsibilities, as well as statewide communications, specifically asking how the presidents and others want the Council to communicate with its stakeholders. Later there may be small group discussions on vital issues of the day, everything from how to recruit new members, increase participation, obtain the needed leadership, and most important how to engage the younger new generation officer potential members.

At 5:30pm there will be another hotel manager hosted open bar reception.

Later, near 6:30pm members will assemble for a gala banquet which will feature the installation of officers for 2008 and a keynote speaker, perhaps a distinguished personality who will speak about our armed forces, the War on Terror, and certain national security issues and challenges.

On Sunday morning there will be a complimentary breakfast for registered guests. Hotel check-out is set for 12:00 noon.

We anticipate this annual meeting will be pleasant, interesting, and in many ways profitable. Again, all MOAA members throughout California are invited to attend.
