2007 EVENT HOLDS PROMISE OF PROFIT AND FUN
The Council’s late 2007 EXCOM meeting and Council of Chapter Presidents Annual Meeting will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in San Luis Obispo, November 30-December 2, 2007, in order to conduct the Council’s business and provide “best practices” information and assistance to chapter leaders.
Hotel reservations need to be made no later than October 31st in order to obtain the special event rates, $119 plus taxes for a single or double. The hotel reservation telephone number is (805) 549-0800. Be sure to indicate MOAA California Council of Chapters as the group name. Reservations and payment are the responsibility of those attending.
A sheet providing full information about the Annual Meeting and details along with a registration form are available from the Secretary, e-mail secretarycalmoaa@gmail.com. There is no registration fee. The form is simply used to indicate an intent to attend and provide an effective means of meal payment.
The Council has only one general meeting per year and it’s an important one. Most chapters in California are affiliated with CAL-MOAA. The chapters remit an annual dues amount. Being the final authority, chapter presidents make up the decision-making group for all Council business.
All EXCOM members, chapter presidents, other officers and directors, individual chapter members, as well as other interested persons are urged to attend. And there are good reasons for attendance.
Profit
The meeting is an opportunity to formally and informally obtain useful information about chapter management issues and “best practices” from around the state and nation.
More specifically, there will be reports about how Council personnel have been representing the chapters to MOAA National in Alexandria, VA, especially the “Storming the Hill” event, the California Department of veterans Affairs in Sacramento, the California State Commanders Veterans Council, and elsewhere.
There will be information provided about the extent the Council in 2007 has carried out its purposes, giving presidents a chance to make an evaluation and determine the real value of the dues payment. The information will focus on support to MOAA National, the California legislative program and achievements, how chapters with special needs have been supported and served, and how Council members have been maintaining liaison with other veterans groups with similar interests and objectives. There will be a summary provided of past and planned events and activities.
The Council has been making an extraordinary effort to communicate statewide and beyond. Find out what progress has been made with electronic and internet communications, specifically the web site and web log. It will an opportunity to help determine how the Council will communicate in the future.
There will be a number of management issues on the table, everything from how the Council will deal with income and expenditures, formulate a 2008 budget, to setting operational objectives for the coming year, setting a course that will bring added value to the Council and its chapters.
There will be a number of speakers, some prominent, who will provide information and answer questions, providing sound counsel and advice for the new year.
Fun
The entire Annual Meeting is being planned for maximum social interaction, a time to greet old acquaintances and friends and make new ones. There will be both structured and informal events almost guaranteed to please.
The Central California Coast has a wealth of attractions from the coastal hills to the sea, perfect for a getaway for a day or two before or following the Annual Meeting.
There will be plenty to do for spouses and guests or those otherwise not attending the sessions, ranging from short trips afield, to the San Luis Obispo downtown and historical sites, to the rather unique Madonna Inn.
The annual meeting is going to be a quick Friday evening to Sunday morning affair but it’s going to be packed with plenty to do and see. It’s a chance to participate fully with the Council, help decide the course of future actions, and go away better prepared to lead an organization.
