VADM RYAN OFFERS MOAA ASSISTANCE TO MEMBER FIRE VICTIMS
Norb Ryan has been monitoring the Southern California wildfire situation closely and has been following the plight of MOAA members evacuated from their homes and neighborhoods.
Council President LtCol Larry Stumpf, USAF-Ret reported that, “My own experience on Monday with the mandatory evacuation from my beach front apartment in Solana Beach (North County San Diego) was an inconvenience to say the least with the circuitous route we took on available freeways that were not closed to return to Riverside.”
Col Lee Lange II, USMC-Ret, Director, Council and Chapter Affairs Department, has been in close contact with California members and has been keeping Admiral Ryan right up to date on fire and evacuation developments. “I called Cal-MOAA president Larry Stumpf last night about the impact of the fires on MOAA chapter members. He was in contact with his area directors but information so far limited. He was forced to evacuate himself as indicated below and spent over 5 hours trying to get home to Riverside - normally a 2 hour ride.”
Col Bill Gavitt, USAF-Ret, a resident of Riverside, reported at one point that heavy ash was falling throughout the area but apparently he and his family were not forced to evacuate.
Larry Stump continued, “I have contacted personally by telephone with the five of our eight area
directors that have been affected by the fires for their input. So far, it has been the inconveniences that I mentioned. However as time goes by, we will get a better handle on those, if any, that were/are affected more severely. We will keep close contact and keep you advised either by individual notification or by CAL-MOAA and Area Directors of CAL-MOAA.
“It was a pleasure knowing that Adm Ryan and MOAA National is concerned with our people who may have been affected by the recent California fires,” he added.
