SAN GABRIEL VALLEY CHAPTER GOES DORMANT

Long time members and friends gathered for a holiday luncheon on December 12, 2007 at the San Miguel Room of the Capistrano Suites Resort Hotel in Arcadia.

The occasion was marked by a few remarks from members and ongoing chapter officers and directors hailing the holiday season and offering best wishes for the new year.

Interim President Colonel Gliaudys thanked all those present for their support of the chapter’s activities over the past year. Other chapter officers Past President Colonel Ward Wenner, Treasurer Phil Mielke, Recording Secretary LCDR Don Hahn and Directors LTC John Bartos and LTC Mike Coye received kudos for their exemplary work over the past and earlier years.

A few members present recounted some of the earlier years of the chapter that began over four decades ago.

During the business portion of the luncheon, members were informed that the Fern Lusk Memorial Account of $19,000 had been donated to the National MOAA scholarship fund to continue the support of young persons who display potential in their studies and participation in civic activities.

Chapter members were advised that they may attend events sponsored by two neighboring chapters, Riverside March Field and Rio Hondo in 2008. Their contact numbers were distributed.

The adjournment gavel ended the year’s final social event.

    Events Update
The chapter enters the new year in an unprecedented way as no new candidates for officers nor directors have stepped forward to be nominated for leadership positions.

The Current Board of Directors and officers have acted to insure that the records and documents of the chapter are preserved. They will be forwarded to the National MOAA at months end.

A postcard advisement regarding the final developments in the dormancy process will be sent to all chapter members.

Starting January 1, 2008 the chapter will not be active, ending 44 years of service in the San Gabriel Valley.

The green area is the San Gabriel Chapter - as I recall there are some 80 zip codes in this Los Angeles Area i.e. as many as several States in total.

What a sad demise because Ray Scott the Chapter organizer was one our finest leaders and if he was with us today I feel he could have somehow averted this action.
Likewise our deceased first Cal-MOAA Council President in 1983 Dave Wells was a San Gabriel Chapter member. It must also be saddening for prior Chapter President, long time participant in State TROA affairs and now retiring after 9 years as Council Treasurer “Ike” Isensee.
I do need to provide additional information pertaining to adjacent area Chapters. Verdugo Hills (Yellow area)is immediately adjacent to the West. Also Mt Baldy (Rose area)is immediately adjacent to the East and Rio Hondo (Light blue) adjoins to the South. Riverside March Field though is nowhere in the vicinity.

Regretfully our SGV Chapter is going into dormancy in 2008 despite the best efforts to maintain its activities. Our Officers and Board recognized the facts of our fading organizational life in the Chapter. Even as the military movement to retreat is considered even more difficult to execute than the attack, so too is winding down a Chapter. All of our Chapter’s Officers and Board of Directors performed with skill in this matter. I have great regard for their contributions in these bittersweet months when 44 years of Chapter life was entering into abeyance. All members of our Chapter who desire to continue their social participation without administrative or leadership involvement will still have the opportunity to attend Rio Hondo or Verdugo MOAA Chapters in 2008.
