COUNCIL NEEDS EVENT PLANNER
There is a current opening for someone to serve the Council as Convention Committee Chair, a meeting planner replacing CAPT Bill Sturman, USN (RET), a key position. In addition we need several members who will serve on the committee and provide advice and counsel as well as direct assistance when needed.
It’s an interesting and potentially self-satisfying role for someone who wants to serve at the statewide level, who likes and enjoys working with people, who is comfortable with and pays close attention to detail, and essentially who wants to make a difference.
This position involves working with the Secretary, Treasurer, and others to identify appropriate meeting locations, negotiate and contract with hotels, restaurants, and other facilities, plan and coordinate space utilization, manage event registration, and settle accounts.
For 2008, the committee and planners will work with a local host chapter to set up a May timeframe EXCOM meeting perhaps somewhere on the central coast. In mid-October the requirement will be to work with MOAA National on a joint meeting at South Lake Tahoe, working with the resort hotel to provide overnight accomodations, meeting space, meal service, and more for the EXCOM meeting and Council of Presidents Annual Meeting.
Most recently the Central California Coast Chapter hosted the 30 November-2 December 2007 Annual Meeting in San Luis Obispo with CDR Earl “Gus” Gustafson handling the details. He did an outstanding job contacting the hotel, arranging for needed facilities and space, arranging some wonderful meals, managing the registrations, and in short coordinating the entire event.
Earlier the Santa Maria-Lompoc Chapter and Maj Roger Flocken, USAF-Ret, arranged an EXCOM meeting at Vandenberg Air Force Base and gave us a flawless event, providing cost-effective overnight accomodations on base, a breakfast meal in the local dining facility, and a very nice meeting room.
And at one point, CDR John Sammons, USPHS (RET), the Council’s current Secretary, arranged for an Oakland EXCOM meeting at a suites hotel on the Estuary with meeting room, meals at a local seafood restaurant, and plenty of amenities.
Phelps Hobart, a member of the Sacramento Chapter who plans events as something of a hobby and is highly experienced, planned, organized, and coordinated Rally 2006, the Annual Meeting which was held at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento. It was a very successful event and Phelps did a terrific job for which he has our gratitude.
It is difficult to conduct the Council’s business without widespread member participation. Again, this is an opportunity to be a part of the Council’s statewide service efforts, make a difference, and have some fun along the way.
