AIR FORCE JROTC PROGRAM FACES POSSIBLE CLOSURE
The Novato High School Air Force JROTC program currently faces possible program closure due to the severe California state educational budget cuts.
The program has been officially notified by the Novato Unified School District (NUSD) that the JROTC program may close this July. We expect a final decision about the future of the JROTC program in mid-May after the state budget revision.
Until then, the JROTC staff, parents, boosters, and cadets will convey our concerns and recommendations to the school district.
The JROTC staff and cadets would like to express our deepest appreciation to Mrs. Jean Bird and Lt Col Howard Pierson for making a generous donation to our JROTC program on behalf of the Marin County Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). Mrs. Bird and Lt Col Pierson provided the donation after the cadets performed a color guard during the memorial service for Lt Col Grant Bird.
Their generous donation will be used to help save the program from California State educational budget cuts as well as create a world-class leadership education program.
The Novato High School cadets were proud to perform the color guard in honor of Lt Col and Mrs. Grant Bird, the Bird family, American veterans, and the community. The cadets fully understand the fact that we live a great life in America simply because of great American families such as the Bird and Pierson families.
We thank Lt Col Palmer for donating his P-38 model airplane to our unit that is now proudly displayed in our classroom. Lastly, we thank Major Roy Pfeifer, JROTC booster president, for always helping the JROTC raise funds. We know how tough these economic times are and we salute you all.
BBCA fundraising efforts stand at $11,250 is working to establish Bingo Nights, dates TBA.

Jr ROTC update
Up until this year, almost 70% of CA JROTC programs received PE credit. Recently, our state’s Department of Education specifically mandated that districts are prohibited from allowing JROTC PE credit.
Some school boards, like the one in Long Beach have courageously said NO to the pressure from Sacramento and have retained PE credit(as is their legal right under the Ed Code). In fact, according to our governor, school boards can specifically adjust PE course credit at the local level (see PDF attachment)! Getting PE credit in greatly helps us with RECRUITING and RETENTION.
If our state legislators pass AB 223 (or 351), our district can openly allow PE credit - which if they believe in our program, they will.
We must make a maximum effort to win PE credit for our good kids.
This may help the Novato JROTC program if you just pick up the phone and call Mark Leno’s office (for Marin residents) to voice your support for AB 223 Mark Leno’s office San Rafael 3501 Civic Center Drive Suite 425 San Rafael, CA 94903(415) 479-6612
