    2009 Dues Payable

FINANCIAL SUPPORT CRITICAL TO CONTINUED SUCCESS

Affiliated chapters are encouraged to make the 2009 Council dues payment well in advance of the April 1st deadline.

Chapters pay $0.75 per regular member on the rolls December 31, 2008. Checks should be made payable to CAL-MOAA and forwarded to the Council’s treasurer, Col Rita Solander, RN, USAF-Ret, 1241 Grossmont Drive, Riverside, CA 92506.

A regular member is one who pays dues to the chapter. Honorary members and Auxiliaries are not included.

Council officers and directors have been very busy representing chapter members before the MOAA staff in Arlington, VA, the United States Congress, California legislators, the California State Commanders Veterans Council (CSCVC), and, the California Department of Veterans Affairs, Sacramento. Chapter needs and wants are communicated to these organizations and individuals on a timely basis; members have received many concessions as a result of these efforts. The chapter’s dues payment helps make contact with these organizations and outcomes possible. continue reading

    Administrative Issues

SUPPORT YOUR COUNCIL BEGINNING IN EARLY 2009

The Council needs chapter assistance in order to be effective and efficient.

Contact Information January is a big month for new chapter officer installations. Many chapters will change presidents and other officers and directors. It will be important for chapters to send change information to MOAA national and there is a procedure for doing so–see the MOAA website.

At the same time, it’s critical for chapters to send the name and contact information, including e-mail address, for the new president to secretarycalmoaa@gmail.com and warren@cal-moaa.org.

The chapter president is the Council’s point of contact. Every effort will be made to keep the president fully informed of Council activities, events, and issues. If the president does not have an e-mail capability it would be important to provide an alternate name and contact information. The objective is to have every chapter president in the communications loop. continue reading

Fort Ord Veterans Cemetery Bill Heads to Governor for Signature

SACRAMENTO – By a vote of 75-0, the state legislature has given final approval for legislation authored by Assemblymember John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) to provide a plan to fund operations costs for a veterans cemetery to be built at the former Ford Ord. AB 3035 calls for the creation of an endowment fund into which donations would be deposited to fund cemetery operations costs. The bill now goes to Governor Schwarzenegger for his signature.

“More than twelve years ago, Central Coast veterans began the quest to provide veterans a local place of rest where their loved ones can go to give their respects,” said Jack Stewart, chairman of the County of Monterey Military and Veterans Affairs Commission. “We’ve come a long way, with an innovative endowment plan proposed through this bill and a non-profit foundation established in anticipation of the endowment fund. We heartily encourage Governor Schwarzenegger to sign this landmark legislation.”

“Thanks to the dogged efforts of local veterans, we’ve taken a major step closer to the cemetery becoming a reality,” said Mr. Laird. “This phase of the veterans cemetery story has been marked by determination, creative solutions and bi-partisan compromise. I’m hopeful the governor will take this project forward by signing the bill.”

Supporters of AB 3035 include: • Air Force Sergeants Association • Armed Forces Retirees Association of California • California Association of County Veterans’ Service Officers • California State Commanders Veterans Council • County of Monterey • Ford Ord Reuse Authority • Jewish War Veterans of the USA • Legion of Valor • Marine Corps League • Military Order of the Purple Heart • Monterey County Military and Veterans Commission • Monterey County United Veterans Council • National Guard Association of California • Paralyzed Veterans of America • Reserve Officers Association • Veterans of Foreign Wars • Vietnam Veterans of America

Once the State Controller determines adequate funds are available for operation of the cemetery, the legislation will trigger the California Department of Veterans Affairs to develop and submit a State Veterans Cemetery Grant Program application to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Approval of the application would lead to federal construction of the cemetery, with operations to be funded by the State of California using funds raised through the proposed endowment.

AB 3035 enjoys bi-partisan support from local legislators, including principal co-authors Senator Jeff Denham (R-Merced) and Assemblymember Simon Salinas (D-Salinas), and co-author Senator Abel Maldonado (D-Santa Maria).

    Delinquent Dues

SOME CHAPTER PAYMENTS NOT YET RECEIVED

CAL-MOAA treasurer Col Ike Isensee, USMC-Ret, reports that there are still some chapters that have not yet made the 2006 dues payment.

Each chapter helps support the Council’s work by making an annual payment of $0.75 per active member. Chapter treasurers likely know the payment procedure and where to send the check. If there are payment or other related questions, please contact Colonel Isensee directly.

We have been working hard, using this weblog technology and otherwise, to demonstrate the Council’s value to chapters.

Sergeant Jones was assigned to the induction center, where he was to advise new recruits about their government benefits, especially their Serviceman’s Group Life Insurance (SGLI). It wasn’t long before Captain Smith noticed that Sgt. Jones had almost a 100% record for insurance sales, which had never happened before. Rather than ask about this, the captain stood in the back of the room and listened to Jones’ sales pitch.

Jones explained the basics of the GI insurance to the new recruits, and said, “If you have GI insurance and go into battle and are killed, the government has to pay $200,000.00 to your beneficiaries. If you don’t have GI insurance, and you go into battle and get killed, the government has to pay only a maximum of $6,000. “Now,” he concluded, “which bunch do you think they are going to send into battle first?”

As the famous radio commercial for home mortgages goes, “There is no selling here; either we can lower your costs or we can’t.”

CAL-MOAA provides a wide array of both direct and indirect support services to affiliated chapters. It would be appreciated if the 2006 dues payment is made promptly.
