EXPIRATION DATE ON THE BACK OF YOUR MILITARY ID CARD?
    2008/10/21

Yes, there it is on the back of your card, in the medical block, under “EXP DATE.” Before TRICARE For Life (TFL) was enacted in 2001, the expiration date indicated when you dropped off the TRICARE Prime or Standard rolls upon turning age 65. So why do folks age 65 and older with TFL still see the expiration date on the back of their card? continue reading

    Desperate Plea

MESSAGE TO GOLDEN WEST CHAPTER MEMBERS

I apologize for missing our September meeting, but, I was recovering from a medical procedure.

As I promised in my last newsletter, MG Mall gave an outstanding presentation.

At our October meeting we should have another great presentation by General Doolitle’s Grandaughter; who isalso a renowned aviator.

Unfortunately all requests for members to serve on the nominating committee have been declined by the members we contacted. I will be out of town until October 1 so I am requesting that interested members contact Tim Richards or any board member with positions you will desire to hold.

We are a volunteer organization run by volunteers; so, without volunteers for board positions it will be necessary to either fold or merge. This is your choice. By failing to volunteer for a board position, your are voting to terminate our chapter of MOAA. I hope that the choice to volunteer is made by enough members to fill vacant board positions.

I look forward to seeing a large turnout for our October meeting. We will hold nominations from the floor and put together a slate of nominees to allow a vote in November and installation in January.

    CDR Allan Thompson, usn (ret)
    President

BRITISH RELEASE INTERESTING WORLD WAR II STORY

Starting in 1941, an increasing number of British airmen found themselves as the involuntary guests of the Third Reich, and the authorities were casting-about for ways and means to facilitate their escape. Now obviously, one of the most helpful aids to that end is a useful and accurate map, one showing not only where-stuff-was, but also showing the locations of ’safe houses’, where a POW on-the-loose could go for food and shelter. Paper maps had some real drawbacks: They make a lot of noise when you open and fold them, they wear-out rapidly, And if they get wet, they turn into mush.

Someone in MI-5 got the idea of printing escape maps on silk. It’s durable, can be scrunched-up into tiny wads, and unfolded as many times as needed, and makes no noise what-so-ever. At that time, there was only one manufacturer in Great Britain that had perfected the technology of printing on silk, and that was John Waddington, Ltd.

When approached by the government, the firm was only too happy to do its bit for the war effort. continue reading
