    Annual Meeting at SLO

PLENTY FOR SPOUSES AND GUESTS TO SEE AND DO

This just might be the quintessential small town: tree-lined streets, a compact downtown, grand old buildings and a slow easy pace that makes it perfect for an overnight getaway.

San Luis Obispo provides plenty to see and do for spouses and guests while Council members are in business sessions.

Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the city offers plenty of shopping, a wide selection of restaurants and several worthy historical sights, including Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded in 1772 by Father Junipero Serra. continue reading

    Easy Way to SLO

SIT BACK, RELAX, TAKE AMTRAK ALL THE WAY

“The insomniac’s period of sleep, whether she falls asleep or not, is like Charlotte’s eight-hour, nine-hour, ten-hour interstate bus ride. In that period she has no duties, no obligations, no responsibilities, no one to confront, because there is no one to confront. She has official permission from God to take care of nothing for the duration.” I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe 2004.

Travel to the upcoming Council of Chapter Presidents Annual Meeting scheduled for November 30 to December 2, 2007, San Luis Obispo, offers an opportunity for a whole lot more than a series of meetings and speakers.

There are those who say, “It’s not the destination, it’s the gettin’ there!”

Go to your local Amtrak station serving the Coast Starlight and before you know it you’ll be off on a rail adventure–view California from the huge picture windows of the lounge car, enjoy a light meal and refreshments at the snack bar, or experience the grandeur of a full course meal in the dining car. And all at 79 miles per hour on those long stretches of track. continue reading

    EXCOM Seeks Guidance

STILL TIME TO OFFER ANNUAL MEETING AGENDA ITEMS

During last year’s late October Rally 2006 Annual Meeting in Sacramento COL Pete Peterka, President, Redwood Empire Chapter, took the floor and suggested that the Council was not communicating effectively with affiliated chapters and others.

As a result, over the past year more than 800 late news, information, opinion, views, and commentary items were posted to the web log, all to remove any real or imagined perceptions that the Council does not communicate.

According to the bylaws, The Council of Chapter Presidents is in fact “The Council” and is the ultimate authority. The Council consists of the president of each affiliated chapter, or in that person’s absence, a representative designated in writing.

“The Executive Committee (EXCOM) shall act for the Council between Council meetings and carry out the programs of the Council and the duties designated by the bylaws.”

The chapter presidents, separately and collectively, have a responsbility to provide guidance to the EXCOM members, outlining the important issues and indicating what the Council should do throghout the future period.

When COL Peterka called the issue of interpersonal and interorganizational communication effectiveness to the attention of the EXCOM, action was taken immediately to remedy the situation. continue reading

ANNUAL MEETING OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR FINE DINING

The upcoming November 30-December 2, 2007 San Luis Obispo Council of Presidents annual meeting is going to be a time to conduct CAL-MOAA business and yet there will be plenty of time to tour the area, explore a beautiful college town, and have a great time on the Central Coast.

But more than anything, there will be opportunities to drive to Morro Bay, see the famed rock, and explore the seaside village. For most, Friday afternoon might be a good time for this adventurre, an early dinner, and for some an on-time return for the evening EXCOM meeting.

About an hour north of the hotel along Highway 101 is Camp Roberts and its adjacent Fort Hunter Liggett, two active and vibrant military installations preparing soldiers for overseas deployment. Active duty officers especially, those stationed there, try as often as they can to visit Morro Bay and the mild coast weather, just to relax and have a fine meal at one of the local restaurants. continue reading
