    Area 2 Joint Luncheon

CARRIER HORNET SITE FOR AUGUST 8th MEETING

Area 2 Director CAPT Jim Torres, USN (RET) wrote in a February 2nd e-mail, “We did it!!!!! Nearly all the pieces are in place. Our Bay Area ‘MOAA Day on the Hornet’ is a go.”

This long anticipated event has been set for early August, a month when many chapters are silent and do not hold lunchon or dinner meetings. It will be held aboard the USS Hornet Museum at the former Alameda Naval Air Station, Oakland/Alameda.

The event is going to be open to all 4,000+ MOAA members within the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas but with specific focus on members and guests of the seven Area 2 chapters. A flyer will be prepared giving all the details and should be ready for distribution to chapter members in early spring. The price is expected to be between $20 and $30 depending on the number of attendees.

After a mid-morning arrival members will be escorted on a docent-led tour of the ship, followed by lunch and a speaker. Later, members can continue with a self-guided tour of the ship and depart when they desire. continue reading

    Bay Area Meeting

EXCITEMENT MOUNTS WITH JOINT MEETING PLANNING

CAPT Mark Shafer, USNR (RET), President, Marin County Chapter is spearheading early planning for a joint meeting of at least Marin County, Contra Costa County, and San Francisco chapters sometime in 2008. CAPT Jim Torres, USN (RET), Director, Area 2 and President, Contra Costa Chapter and LCDR Steve Barber, USN (RET), President, San Francisco Chapter offered full support and will participate in the planning process.

Area directors frequently schedule periodic meetings for the chapter presidents or their representatives in accordance with bylaws provisions, but apparently this joint meeting is going to involve perhaps the three chapters and all their members.

The early thinking is that the meeting might be held aboard the aircraft carrier Hornet berthed at what used to be the Alameda Naval Air Station, a central location. The Hornet is now a museum, and Jim Torres serves as a docent. Already the group is looking into arrangements for a catered luncheon. continue reading
