    Give Me 10!

PROGRAM STARTING MARCH 1ST WELL UNDERWAY

Earlier this year, Col Lee Lange II, USMC-Ret, Director, MOAA Councils and Chapters Department, sent a letter to all chapter leaders urging full participation in this year’s “Give Me 10!” campaign.

Here’s what he had to say:

Please join us in the 2007 “Give Me 10!” Chapter Recruiting Competition. You’ll be part of an MOAA nationwide campaign to build our membership and strengthen our chapters. With your help we’ll reach our goal of 2,500 new members–and we have terrific incentives to help you get us over the top. No sign up is required–just start recruiting. continue reading

Give Me 10! Kits In the Mail

LATE PACKETS MAILED FROM CALIFORNIA, SHOULD ARRIVE SOON

The 2007 Give Me 10! program is underway, yet the information and support kits due from the vendor, J. Walter Thompson, Inc, are more than a month late but finally on the way.

Give Me 10! totals will be posted on the MOAA website beginning the week of April 1 with state breakdowns sent to Council presidents. As of the end of March, more than 300 new members have been recruited, moving to the 2007 goal of 2,600, up slightly from last year’s 2,500+.

Chapters are being encouraged to participate fully in this year’s campaign, ending the year with a minimum of 10 new members. In addition, and following the philosophy “every member is a recruiter,” chapter members should be encouraged to recruit at least 1 new member each this year. continue reading

    Free Membership Offer

SHOULD HELP CHAPTER GIVE ME 10! EFFORTS

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), some 360,000 strong, is so confident in its professional association opportunities and benefits that it now offers a free, no obligation, first year membership to eligible active duty, National Guard, and Reserve officers.

In its December 2006 magazine issue MOAA states, “Every officer deserves the benefits of MOAA. A gift membership is a great way to introduce a friend or family member to MOAA. Through this special offer you may give a free one-year membership to an active duty, Guard or Reserve officer.” continue reading

    Give Me 10!

    2007 CAMPAIGN STARTS MARCH 1ST

A big factor in MOAA recruiting success was the 2006 Give Me 10! campaign, which gained 2,515 new members, renewals and conversions to life membership. This is more than double the number recruited in 2005. If your chapter took part and it has not received the funds it earned it soon will.

The top recruiting council in the country was the Virginia Council which garnered 554 members. The winning chapter was the Southside, Va., chapter which recruited 319 members. With 75 percent of the Virginia Council’s chapters opting in to Give Me 10! and each of those chapters recruiting at least 10 new members, the council qualified for a “night out With MOAA.” So on Jan. 22 the Virginia council and chapter presidents and their spouses had dinner with Adm. Ryan, Lee Lange and Barry Wright in Richmond. I’m rooting for your council to win the award this year. continue reading

Give Me 10: Membership Recruitment Campaign

This is the first time I can recall a National MOAA President has come online in “THE Affiliate” to encourage an effort as VICE ADM. Norb Ryan JR., USN-Ret. has in the August 2006 Edition. The significance is there folks. Since “THE Affiliate” which reaches only the inboxes of certain Chapter Leaders we are publishing the Adm’s remarks here on the Website so that the widest distribution is possible. In addition we have changed significantly the statistical display of how California Chapters are doing in the Recruiting campaign with respect to Chapter membership figures. Please let us hear from you if you have any suggestions regarding Give Me 10.

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Give Me Ten

    YEAR-LONG RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN DRAWS INTEREST

It’s no secret that the more members we have, a national membership base, the more success we are going to have protecting our interests and promised benefits.

Late last October, a Southern California legislator said he pays attention to the voters who brought him to office, people within his district who vote, and the more supporters there are the more he pays attention and acts on voter requests.

The implication?  No numbers, no influence, no clout.

A detailed investigation shows that chapter membership is either holding steady or in a slow decline, with only the exceptional chapter gaining significant numbers of new members.  But some chapters are doing better or worse than that.

Over the past year, National MOAA has been successful attracting a lot of new members, but on balance the record still shows a net membership decrease.

On that basis, MOAA National is expanding and extending its recent reasonably successful “Give Me Ten” recruitment campaign, an effort conducted at the local chapter level.  All chapters have been challenged to recruit at least 10 new members by December 31, 2006.

Full information about the program can be found at the MOAA website: Click Here.

Some of us recently received a letter from Col. Chris Giaimo, USAF-Ret, of MOAA’s Council and Chapter Affairs department, telling of clear shortfalls in both effort and new member numbers in the large states of California and Florida.  He wasn’t pleased.

Sometimes there’s the temptation to shout out that the reason for an often dismal record has to do with structural changes in California society, the closing of military bases and facilities, and what’s going on with Reserve and National Guard deployments and outcomes.  In our state, it’s often hard to get blood out of a turnip.  Officer members of “The Greatest Generation” are growing older; there are far fewer younger officers than ever before interested, available and eligible for membership.

But the colonel’s admonition is well taken.  There is real value in increasing our chapter and national memberships.

If you take a close look at the ”Give Me Ten” campaign provisions, you’ll find there is a wide array of generous incentives which could bring substantial rewards to chapters, individual recruiters, and even lucky new members.  Some chapters are finding it’s financially feasible to pay a new member’s national dues outright, coming out ahead in the deal.

It’s not an intent here to paint a bleak picture.  Many chapters are doing very well, even recruiting dozens of new members, and it’s possible to get an up-to-date report on chapter activities and numbers as well as the stories of successful chapters, giving numbers recruited and the methods used.  Links to all that information can be found on the website.

To be a part of the campaign, local chapters must contact MOAA National and request a “Give Me Ten” packet, which provides information and instructions.  It will be important to operate within the schedule of key dates, and those also can be found on the website.

The 2006 campaign season is well underway, and bringing in new members is critical to keeping MOAA’s One Powerful Voice as effective as its always been.  All of us have an opportunity to contribute, and win, by participating in this year’s “Give Me Ten” membership campaign.

And, if California is successful recruiting a substantial number of new members, we’re likely to bring some joy to Col Chris Giaimo’s heart.

    Give Me 10 Program

    rally image
This message to National Board Member from California Col Bill Gavitt and two Members from Florida is being placed here as the beginning of the subject so as all following discussion pertaining to this matter hopefully will likewise be posted here so that there will be one location for easy viewing and reference.

    In a message dated 6/15/2006 12:19:14 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, ChrisG@moaa.org writes:

    “Gentlemen:
Adm Ryan is concerned about the lack of support for this year’s GMT program. Lee and I are also concerned. What we have decided to do is twofold.

    1) In those states with (xxxxxx) participation rates where there is or are board members who knows what the GMT program is all about, we’re going to ask them to “interface” with the state president and find out what’s going on (or not, as the case may be) and why. Let’s take Florida & California–our two biggest states. Florida has a 47% opt-in rate (21 out of 45 chapters) California has an opt-in rate of 40% (19 out of 47 chapters) Could you please talk to Larry Stumpf (Bill) and Bill Monk (Fred & Ron) and find out what we (collectively) need to do to get more of them involved in the GMT program–if that is even feasible. Time is ticking.

    2) For those other states, Lee and I have agreed to divide them up and make individual calls to state presidents asking the same questions.

Lastly, if any of you has a personal relationship with another state president and thinks a call from you might help, let us know.
