ALBERT J. ASHURST, CAPT, USN (RET)

CAL-MOAA Director, Area 6 (Southwest Area)


Captain A.J. Ashurst initially assumed duties as CAL-MOAA Area Director, Area 6 in November 2002 and was reelected in November 2004 for a second tour. On 1 January 2009 he resumed the position on Col Bill Reals moving to the Cal-MOAA Vice Presidency.  His area includes Orange and Los Angeles Counties and is made up of eight (8) chapters; i.e. Orange County, Golden West, South Coast, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, San Pedro/South Bay, Rio Hondo and San Gabriel. He has been a member of the CAL-MOAA Strategic Planning Committee both in 1998 and 2005. His home chapter is Orange County where he has completed tours as 1st VP, President and Legislative Chair.


A retired Navy Captain, Ashurst, was commissioned from the NROTC (Holloway Program) in 1951. His primary specialty was surface warfare with a secondary specialty in communications. During his career he commanded three ships (USS Munsee (ATF 10): USS Ramsey (FFG 2) and USS Wabash (AOR 5). He also had one shore command; Naval Communications Station, Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He holds the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. He is a graduate of the Naval Command and Staff Course and the National War College.

Ashurst retired from the Navy in 1977 and returned to civilian life via academe. Ashurst earned an MBA at University of California, Irvine and upon completion joined the faculty and staff of the Graduate School of Management, UCI. He became a member of the Adjunct Faculty and was designated as the Associate Director of Executive Education. He was also the Executive V/P for a small consulting firm involved in organizational development, both public and private sector. In addition to his MBA, he also holds a BS, Economics from Illinois Institute of Technology and an MS, International Relations from George Washington.

Captain Ashurst is a widower with one son and four granddaughters.
