Bobby Butcher MajGen USMC (RET)

CAL-MOAA Director, Area 8 (San Diego)

Major General Butcher was commissioned in 1959 and retired in 1992. He flew the A-4 (Skyhawk) for thirty-one years and during his career he flew every aircraft in the Marine Corps inventory except the AV-8 (Harrier) while avoiding duty inside the "beltway." Through two tours in Vietnam, he flew 300 combat missions, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" and 15 Air Medals.

Other medals include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.

Significant assignments include Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of Marine Attack Training Squadron - 102 (1974-1977); Commanding Officer of Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron - 1 (1980-1982); Assistant Wing Commander, Third Marine Aircraft Wing (1986-1987); Commanding General, Sixth Marine Expeditionary Brigade (1987-1989); Director for Operations (J-3), United States Commander in Chief, Pacific Command (USCINCPac) (1989-1991) and Commanding General, Landing Force Training Command, Pacific (1991-1992). Listed in Marquis Who's Who in America, he is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation (providing financial support for the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Command Museum), the President of Area VIII (San Diego County) of the California Council of the Military Officers Association of America (Cal-MOAA), the First Vice President of the Silver Strand Chapter of MOAA, a member of the Coronado Council of the U.S. Navy League board of directors and an Ex Officio member of the San Diego Aircraft Carrier (USS Midway) Museum board of directors.
